The Advanced Automation System (AAS) of the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will be a very large, complex, real-time system for data acquisition, processing, and storage. It will be a very large, complex, real-time system for data acquisition, processing, and storage. It will interact with the user extensively and with a high degree of responsiveness and it has a planned operational life of 20 to 30 yr. The authors explain the system architecture and design analyses that were specified by the FAA for the AAS project and tell how they have been used to provide insight into the two competing contractors' design processes. They also provide some lessons learned from this project.
