This large space simulator built by Zeiss has been designed for the study of the new portable rockets and satellites of the European Space Agency. After describing the amount of heat produced by the sun on the earth and at different distances from it the author gives a general description of the simulator which comprises: a high pressure water cooled lamp module with 19 high pressure Xenon lamps in a low pressure water cooled housing containing a low pressure nitrogen cooled optical integrator, a special quartz inspection window and a collimating mirror containing hexagonal segments individually cooled with high pressure nitrogen. The power supplies contain separate rectifiers for each of the nineteen lamps.
