The author describes the sixteen bit microprocessor based control system used in DC, 1500 V. 4400 kW, engines for freight services, equipped with a regenerative-rheostatic braking system. The hardware architecture and technology as well as the software tasks and operation are described. Some problems, specific to the digital control of the armature current are studied. One year after putting the first locomotive into service, the author analyses the advantages and drawbacks of programmed logic systems when applied to railway traction. The conclusions drawn indicate that the use of digital techniques is extremely positive and, in the near future will open new possibilities in the data transmission, between equipment by means of multiplexing techniques, in cab data display, by means of VDU and keyboards, and in maintenance using on-board diagnostic software.
