Saturable-core techniques and a microcomputer are used in an improved version of the magnetic flux-gate compass with application to mass-produced automobiles. The flux-gate core consists of several turns of a high-permeability tape wound on a nonmagnetic spool and then sealed in a paper wrapping. The magnetic tape has a thickness in the range 0.002 to 0.004 in., so that the input current required to saturate the core is minimized. The development of the device transfer function between the Earth's magnetic field and the flux-gate output voltages is derived. The microcomputer allows a faster calibration which does not require any type of nulling or feedback circuit.
