Despite the plethora of data logging devices available, there is room for new developments. A submersible data logger (SDL) has been developed by CSIRO for oceanographic use. The system uses CMOS microprocessors and incorporates unique features. It is rugged and very versatile, yet extremely simple to use. A major feature is that the casing need never be opened. A unique, inductively coupled interface is used to program the unit, recall data and charge the batteries, so that the submersible logging unit does not have to be opened or be connected with a cable. The author outlines the system and describes the architecture, novel sampling routines, optimised use of data storage capacity and the inductively coupled communications link.
