Describes the design of a submarine optical repeater and the performance of the field trial transmission line. A field trial transmission line 45 km in length with two repeaters was laid in Sagami Bay off the coat of Izu Peninsula in January, 1982. Repeater spacing was 30 km, and four 400 Mb/s repeater units operating at 1.3 mum wavelength were installed in each repeater housing. After cable laying, transmission experiments were performed successfully and a new method for locating repeater faults was seen to perform well over a long period of time.
