The SRI Command and Control Workstation (CCWS) project, which is supported by the US Navy, has as one of its major goals the creation and application of computer-based, multimedia information systems to support naval command and control activities. Developed for military command and control activities, this system adapts the various media by which people communicate for a potentially unlimited range of applications. The authors describe the CCWS architecture, hardware, and human interface with emphasis on the CCWS multimedia mail system.
