The US Air Force is actively engaged in standardizing its avionics systems, and because many of these are common to a number of different aircraft types, standardization promises significant savings in development and support costs. Building avionics systems over a wide range of aircraft types, however, is a major challenge to manufacturers and developers, since the systems must be designed to meet the most stringent requirements of each aircraft, ranging from small fighters like the F-16 to large transports such as the C-5. The author discusses the various aspects of this standardisation including: software standardisation; standard avionics architecture; organisational structure implementation; current developments; and future directions.
