VSIC applications, Ada software and an integrated avionics system should offer unprecedented reliability and reduced life cycle costs to the US Air Force's advanced tactical fighter (ATF). The author points out that more than dollar550 million per year is being spent on developing the advanced avionic systems for stealth and high-performance airframe designs which would be integrated into the ATF. The perceived growing Soviet threat is cited as a justification of such a large expenditure. The author examines the developments in VHSIC circuitry and explains how this fits into the ATF program. A brief look at the business interests involved in stealth technology is included.
