There are important advantages in having the wind turbine plant installed in a ship or barge hull secured on a swinging mooring and sending power ashore by submarine cable. The system could be built completely in a shipyard with existing cranes and other equipment. It could proceeded to its operating site by sea, emplace its anchors and probably also send its cable ashore using its own equipment. It would have onboard accommodation and services for the commissioning team and could carry facilities for routine maintenance work. Startup and emergency power would be supplied by an auxiliary generator driven by the vessel's propulsion main engine. Wind over water is generally stronger and with less shear than that over land.
