Discusses the requirements for successful communications in space. Antennas will have to be located out on the structure in order to receive an unobstructed view of their targets. Transmitters and receivers will be located as close as possible to their antennas to reduce circuit losses. The control and monitoring subsystem will monitor the status of the communications and tracking system. Present technology must be advanced to provide an operator interface with complex station systems. Touch screens, voice recognition and synthesis and artificial intelligence software must be combined, and fault detection and correction must be incorporated into system designs to relieve the crew of inflight maintenance problems.
