With the aim of blunting the rapid expansion and global projection of a much improved Soviet naval force, the U.S. Navy is parcelling out over dollar100 billion in FY-85 for research and development programs and system procurements that will help achieve a 600-ship fleet by the end of the 1980s. Navy officials predict that the deployment of two new carrier battle groups and the advent of Aegis-equipped ships will do little to offset the quantitative superiority enjoyed by the Soviets, who have more than 1,290 surface combatants at sea, but will prove decisive in any naval engagement principally because of the effect of high technology electronics. The author discusses how the U.S. fleet is being improved by the use of electronics and computer technologies.
