The decision to include a third spacecraft in the Active Magnetospheric Particle Tracer Explorers (AMPTE) mission was made in 1981. The reasons for the inclusion of the United Kingdom Satellite (UKS) are presented together with a description of the spacecraft, its subsystems, and a summary of its early orbit performance. Topics covered include the satellite's mechanical, thermal and power considerations; attitude measurements; attitude and orbital condition; command and data handling; the radio frequency (RF) system; and the qualification testing program for the satellite.
