The flight segment of the Active Magnetospheric Particle Tracer Explorers (AMPTE) program consisted of three separate spacecraft which were launched 'piggyback' into orbit on August 16, 1984. One of the three, the Charge Composition Explorer (CCE), built for NASA by the Applied Physics Laboratory of Johns Hopkins University (APL/JHU), is described in detail. The scientific payload of the CCE consists of five experiments. Three of them are devoted to measurements of ions and particles. The other experiments yield supporting field and plasma-wave information. The authors discuss the design, development, and early performance in orbit.
