Liquid and solid fuel rockets are described and compared. The relative merits of disposable and reusable rockets are discussed. The use of the IUS and the PAM-D rockets in the Space Shuttle program and the Ariane rocket are briefly treated. The Japanese N-II rockets used previously were based on the Delta. The new Japanese rocket for 1985 is the H-1 with a LOX.LH2 second stage and a solid fuel third stage with a payload capacity of 550 Kg. Plans are underway for a 2 ton load H-II rocket for use from 1990.
