British Rail has introduced automatic route setting in two areas controlled by the new Three Bridges signalbox. Previously used to control simple terminal stations, the latest ARS scheme requires complex algorithms to achieve optimum routing of trains. The ARS processor compares the theoretical and actual location of trains, using data from the master timetable and train describer computers, before deciding which trains should get priority at junctions, and then sets up routes that will minimise delays.
