The Viru Viru International Airport was completed with Japanese economic assistance for the first time in Bolivia. The main airport facilities, such as navigational aids, telecommunications facilities and meteorological facilities were supplied by Toshiba. The outstanding features of these facilities are as follows. The instrument landing system (ILS) used a 14-element log periodic antenna as localizer antenna and a single-frequency M-array antenna as glide slope antenna. It was confirmed by a flight check that the ILS performance was satisfactory. In addition, the control signal system linking individual consoles to the communications control unit (CCU) handles a parallel-serial conversion data transmission. This system enables the number cables connecting the consoles to the CCU to be reduced, which drastically improves system reliability.
