The virtual standstill in the growth of national railway systems has effectively been offset by the continued explosion in urban mass-transit systems, or metros. But the technology of these systems is still changing. The beneficial introduction of microelectronics to metro traction systems has been mentioned with reference to chopper control, rectifier/inverter control, centralised supervision and system protection. It is expected that future developments will address many other features, including the last major limitation of metros, viz. their rigidity. Extensive onboard passenger communications and the like could facilitate a much more flexible interface between road and rail transport. With such and other developments the outlook for metros seems both fascinating and assured.
