Describes the work on computerised automation applied to shipboard installations being carried out by Merlin Gerin (Grenoble) and a new company (Renault Automation-Merlin Gerin et Cie) formed by an association with Renault Automation, specialising in programmable controls. The general design principles being followed: namely standardisation of components and hierarchical and decentralised architecture on three levels, are described. The design of the dialogue mode control terminals, a system of tele-diagnosis for the remote supervision of and piloting of the controls, systems for dialogue operation using the telephone network and computer-aided maintenance procedures are described.
