The authors discuss the replacement of the conventional DC traction motor by a self-regulated synchronous motor. They underline the substantial progress made through the elimination of the mechanical commutator. They describe operation under traction conditions, under braking conditions (both regenerative and rheostatic) and the various protection systems of the power circuit. After a description of the motor and of its accessories, a report on the tests performed shows that the results obtained were better than expected.
