The current development status of flywheel energy storage systems is reviewed and their potential for use in space, where the requirements are similar to those of electric vehicles is assessed. Vacuum and zero gravity are advantages peculiar to space which will reduce some of the current problems but careful design will be needed to minimise the precessional effects of the gyroscopic forces.
