Electric locomotives with one-hour ratings of 11 and 9 MW should be in regular use on 25 kV AC and 3 kV DC lines in the Soviet Union before the end of the 1980s. These 300 tonne two-section giants are being evolved from the locomotives in use today so as to cope with a planned doubling of gross trailing loads to some 10000 tonnes - mainly with the aim of raising throughput on busy trunk lines. On the passenger side, emphasis has shifted from increasing speed to running longer trains - also with the objective of overcoming capacity problems. Despite SZD's commitment to electrification of 6400 route-km under the 1981-5 five-year plan, more powerful diesel locos are being developed as well.
