During the summer of 1980 the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) co-sponsored a study at the University of Santa Clara on the feasibility of using machine intelligence in future NASA space missions. This paper briefly describes the study and presents its major results, and then discusses some of the implications of these results for future communications applications in space.
