BMW technical publications indicate a concentration of interest in the use of electronics, with fuel saving whilst retaining driver comfort. Devices for aiding driving, check-out and maintenance are also considered, as are modular engine capacities and automatic gearboxes as well as the familiar search for weight reductions and aerodynamic improvements. Even servicing intervals, when predicted electronically, will take account of time, speeds, pressures and other factors - usually to the advantage of the motorists. One rather surprising result of tests shows that, at least in the case of the BMW cars tested, brisk acceleration to cruising speed is more economical in fuel than the more popular concept of gentle pedal pressure. However, the substantial improvement indicated may not in every case hold good under urban driving conditions. Any further tightening of emissions restraints would adversely affect fuel economy measures.
