Techniques employed in reducing the noise and thermal infrared signatures of Department of Defense diesel engine driven mobile generator sets are presented. The object of the program was to evaluate noise contributing sources of the generator sets and to demonstrate that a noise level of less than 80 dBA at 25 ft. (7.6 m) could be achieved by a kit approach. A second criterion was to reduce the thermal signature emitted by the engine. The best acoustical configuration reduces noise levels by 13 dBA. The basic design of the generator sets was not altered and their performance was not impaired.
