Precision roller bearings used in aircraft must be inspected for minute surface flaws such as scratches, pits, voids in seams, rust, and other such nonuniformities whose sizes are usually of the order of 25 mum. A high-speed electro-optical system that can inspect up to 4000 pieces per hour is described which consists of a precision laser/optical scanner and an electronic subsystem for error recognition, automatic parts feeding, orienting and rejecting, controlled by electro-optical means.
