Hidden beneath the thermal protection tiles on the NASA/Rockwell-International space shuttle orbiter are eighteen navigation and communication system antennas, all designed to withstand the rigors of a launch into space and to operate in earth orbit, during the searing reentry, and in the landing phases of the projected mission. The design of antennas that will withstand 100 missions over a 10 year operational lifetime is discussed.
