The primary function of a warning receiver is to notify the aircraft pilot of the presence of radar signals. The pilot needs quick and accurate information as to how many radar systems are in operation, their types, locations of transmitters, and other information helpful to the survival of the aircraft. The more information is collected, the more complex the radar warning system must become. Due to limitations in size, weight, power consumption, speed of operation, and cost, the most effective systems might be ones employing specialist subsystems. This paper describes such radar warning systems, with arguments in favour of their adoption.
