Research on magnetic fields in the oceans has advanced fundamental earth sciences and the solution of various applied problems; metrological support to apparatus for this purpose involves logical definition of the scientific terminology for magnetic measurements. All-Union State Standard (GOST) 20906-75 'Means of measuring magnetic quantities. Terms and definitions' has a direct bearing on this, as does GOST 18458-73 'Oceanology. Instruments and technical facilities. Terms and definitions', which includes a section on instruments for magnetic measurements in seas and oceans. Some points in these standards are mutually exclusive, however. One of the reasons for disagreements over terminology for means of magnetic meaasurement is that for a long time it was unclear which of the quantities B and H represents the basic characteristic of a magnetic field and what are the dimensions of the unit. In physics, the first problem has been resolved in favor of B, whereas the second problem has not been solved, and it is emphasized there that B and H should be measured in the same units.
