A well-known method for achieving free levitation of ferromagnetic objects depends on a suspension electromagnetic as the inductive part of a tuned circuit which enables static stability of the suspended object. Dynamic instability appears to be fundamentally inherent to the tuned-circuit system, and causes oscillations of the suspended object. A simplified and economic numerical simulation of tuned-circuit levitators has been obtained by employing the averaging method. The approximate system equations obtained by this method demonstrate the characteristic dynamic instability. A relatively simple analytical tool to deal with the instabilities of a complicated electromechanical system is obtained which may enable further improvements in the design of tuned-circuit levitators. One of the main problems encountered at present is the use of such levitators for heavy duties at mains frequencies.
