Telecommunications as a substitute for travel appears to merit serious consideration by policy-makers as a means to restrain or reduce future transportation energy demand. The author examines the telecommunications/travel literature for estimates of the potential savings. These estimates, which range from 16 percent substitutability for urban travel miles, to well over 40 percent of business trips, indicate the potential energy savings which might result from greater investment and effort in this area, especially if carried out in conjunction with government transportation policies geared to reducing travel for certain types of meetings.
