Since SBB opened its first fully automated marshalling yard in November 1975 a number of problems have come to light. The release speed of both clasp and eddy-current retarders has proved slower than expected and compensation is necessary in the case of light axles, but the authors consider that the 2*DELTV algorithm used for spacing cuts is nevertheless sound in principle. The BMII yard is peculiar in that wagons are run out of the reception sidings and over the hump by gravity.
