Noise and vibration control has become a primary consideration in the design of modern rail transit systems. One of the basic and ongoing activities for the MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority) project is to provide basic acoustical criteria, design procedures and standards which will enable MARTA patrons and the neighbouring communities to enjoy the quietest possible new transportation system. The intent of the design is to provide a quiet and comfortable environment for patrons in stations and riding on cars, along with minimizing the impact of the system construction and operations to insure that the system will be as unobtrusive as possible.
