Fifty years after completion of South Africa's first main line electrification, parts of the 4500 km network have had to be heavily reinforced to permit operation of 7300 tonne trains hauled by six locomotives. This in part is why the 1625 route-km authorised for immediate electrification following the 1973 oil crisis includes two major segments at 25 kV a.c., for which fixed equipment is 45% cheaper than for 3000 V d.c. in a heavy-load situation.
