Historical aspects of merchant ships navigation are surveyed, from the earliest uses of the lodestone and sextant up to modern radio methods. Recent methods summarised include radar, magnetic compass, the Decca and Lovan systems satellite navigation, gyro-compass and three types of logging-'patent', 'SAL' and 'Chernikev'. Principles of hyperbolic course plotting, using a base-line with two nodes are illustrated. The Anschiitz compass is described, and technical principles are outlined to indicate the role played by mechanical, hydrostatic and electrolytic components.
