To detect aircraft at either low or high altitudes with equal effectiveness creates conflicting requirements. It is extremely difficult to design a single antenna whose radiation pattern offers a wide elevation angle and sharp cutoff at horizon level. A new antenna provides two radiation patterns for reception. By using two superimposed horns at the focal point of a single reflector it is possible to have a slim beam at small elevation and a broad beam at medium and high altitudes. The pulse compression technique for improving discriminating capacity, and Doppler principle moving target indicators are described, both requiring an extremely stable and pure datum wave. Where low altitude detection is needed over a large area, airborne systems or fixed elevated stations are feasible.
