The experimental programme demonstrated that a substantial reduction of natural clutter false targets can be achieved by combining the processed outputs of sensors using widely separated wavebands. This false target reduction is achieved whilst maintaining a high probability of target detection. Although the results shown have been obtained by using only the amplitude information from each sensor and applying simple processing techniques, both line and frame thresholding yield good performance. For a number of applications this may be all that is necessary and permits the use of coarse resolution IR sensors and cost effective millimetric radar systems employing a minimum of components. Passive millimetric contrast detectors in conjunction with IR detectors also provide effective false target reduction but are limited by the density of cloud cover.
