It has been increasingly recognised that Millimetre-Wave (MMW) technology will play a central role in the development of the next generation of autonomous 'smart' weaponry. The high range resolutions and low beamwidths possible in the millimetric waveband provide the capability for both accurate terminal guidance and the detection/classification of prospective targets to select those of high value. Millimetric Radar is not attenuated as strongly as Infrared (IR) radiation by either fog or smoke, although performance is degraded in conditions of heavy rain. The wide bandwidths of the principal millimetric operating frequencies (corresponding to 'windows' in the atmospheric attenuation curve) help to reduce the susceptibility of MMW to electronic countermeasures (ECM).
