There is a growing trend towards incorporating some intelligence into munitions in order to enhance their effectiveness. Ground or air launched TGSM, shells and static munitions are all areas where some intelligence is desirable. Some of the factors governing the choice of sensor are range of performance, ruggedness, cost, space volume, reliability and rapidity of deployment. Possible solutions are the use of mm wave, infra-red or a combination of both. The purpose of this paper is to give an overall view of the types of sensors available in the infra-red.
