Countermeasures to enemy radar consisted of electronic jamming, window, spoofs and, where possible, avoidance. It was therefore necessary to know at least the locations of enemy radars, and the frequencies on which they operated. For some operations, more detailed information was needed. Much of this information was acquired using fairly convential manually-tuned receivers carried in specialised aircraft. However, to collect information from deep inside Germany and occupied Europe, it was necessary to put search receivers in aircraft of the bomber force. Usually special operators could not be spared, or accomodated on such missions, so the receiver had to be fully-automatic, and bring back a record for subsequent analysis. To give an indication of the techniques avaiable and used at the time, the following notes outline four airborne automatic systems (including a combined receiver/jammer) for which the writer was responsible.
