The organic Rankine cycle (ORC) solar dynamic power systems (SDPS) is an attractive system for space power generation. The ORC-SDPS consists of a concentrator, a radiator, a power conversion unit, and a receiver with thermal energy storage (TES) subsystem. The TES subsystem must be capable of charging and discharging the energy such that the ORC-SDPS can meet the power demands, including any emergency power requirements, during the orbital insolation and eclipse periods. The criteria used in designing the ORC-TES subsystem are presented and discussed in this paper. The design evaluation for the TES canister includes: (1) the material compatibility tests, (2) the measurement of thermophysical properties of phase change materials, (3) the thermal analysis, and (4) the fabrication and testing of various types of canisters. A brief description of an automated test facility for the TES canister is presented. Additional test results from the deuterium (hydrogen) permeation testing are also presented. The paper concludes that the significant technical data base is established for the design of TES subsystem of the ORC-SDPS.
