During the acquisition segment of a hydrographic survey, vessels equipped with sonar equipment measure the local depth as well as their own position. For an accurate survey to be performed, the vessel position must be known accurately, heave motion must be measured and compensated, and the vessel attitude must be known. The Navstar Global Positioning System operated in the differential mode can provide an accuracy on the order of 5 m or better for ship positioning. GPS, augmented with other low-cost sensors, can also provide the required accuracies for heave and attitude compensation. This paper describes a system concept to achieve these accuracies with special emphasis on ease of integration, cost minimization, selection of readily available, off-the-shelf equipment, and screw work load reduction. Proposed implementations are presented for the Differential Shore Station, the Shipboard System, and the Data Link System. Results of computer simulations for alternative shipboard filter designs are provided.
