This paper describes a flight test conducted by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Technical Center to investigate altitude aiding as a means of improving navigational accuracy of a Gloval Positioning System (GPS) receiver durig three-satellite coverage. Use of the currently proposed 18-satellite constellation will result in more frequent periods of bad geometry, which increases the importance of aiding techniques. Constant altitude flights were conducted during periods of good and bad satellite geometry to verify system performance. Manual altitude inputs were made in an effort to maintain high accuracy of the horizontal position solution. The project provided an initial investigation, in a dynamic environment, of the altitude aiding issue. Results of this and subsequent tests will be used to evaluate the suitability of techniques and procedures which will enable continuous accurate navigation during periods of three-satellite coverage. Results showed that altitude aiding does improve positional accuracy during three-satellite coverage. Aiding also improved accuracy during some periods of poor satellite geometry. The type of geometry affects the amount of performance improvement which is possible.
