The increasing multiplicity of loads that must be supplied by auxiliary power sources in rolling stock, including the widespread installation of air conditioners, means that their sources have correspondingly larger capacities. This has increased demand for static inverters (SIVs) to replace conventional motor-generator sets. Ever since the Corporation supplied the first Japanese SIV in 1966, it has established a strong installation record for SIVs. The article describes the development of an auxiliary power source for rolling stock that employs the latest advances in power-semiconductor technology - a GTO double-chopper transistor inverter - to achieve high efficiency, compact size, and low operating noise. An outline of the equipment and test results are also given.
