Future spacecraft missions with multikilowatt electrical power requirements and demands for autonomous operations require the use of computers within the power system. A NASA sponsored study of space power distribution system technology has resulted in the development and delivery of an autonomously managed power system to the Marshall Space Flight Center. This system will be used to demonstrate new technology in power system components and management. This paper describes an autonomously managed electrical power system beginning with the power system components, followed by the definition of management functions required for autonomous system operation. The final power system contains embedded microprocessor-based controllers. The hardware/software architecture of each of these controllers is discussed, and the rationale is presented for the selection of certain controller components.
