In order to satisfy autonomous system and subsystem requirements into the 1990's and beyond, we have embarked on a set of development tasks with a tiered approach that will result in implementation of power system autonomy on a wide scale, ranging from minor functions to a complete microprocessor based system. The tiered approach to this development will be evolutionary; many of the intermediate steps to overall power system autonomy will allow their introduction into more near term applications. This will allow us to maintain the overall integrity of the system architecture (with autonomy requirements flowing primarily from defense systems and space station type applications), while still developing functions applicable to the less complex commercial satellite requirements.
