Proving that the thermal energy storage (TES) will be a safe and reliable means of storing energy on the Space Station is a major technological challenge. Two major areas of the TES which are design challenges are the compatibility between the storage medium and the containment material and the zero-g effects. This paper has discussed in great detail the ongoing work directed toward solving the materials compatibility problem. As a result of this materials compatibility test program, definite conclusions should be available at the end of 1986. Verification of zero-g performance of a TES system through flight testing is planned. These efforts should contribute significantly toward resolving the issues associated with thermal energy storage systems for the Space Station solar dynamic power system.
