Das Space Shuttle besitzt ein sehr komplexes Nachrichtenuebertragungs- und Nachfuehrsystem. Es ist in drei andere Spezialnetze eingebettet, das Tracking und Data Relay Satellite System, das Ground Space Flight Tracking and Data Network und das Satellite Control Facility Netz. Die Struktur des Netzes wird erlaeutert und die Systemphilosophie dargelegt. Bei der Entwicklung mussten eine Reihe neuartiger Probleme geloest werden, um eine sichere Verbindung waehrend aller Phasen des Fluges zu erreichen. Nach einer Darstellung des Systems gehen die Autoren auf moegliche Entwicklungen bei der kuenftigen Raumstation ein.
