This paper examines various aspects of automation and introduces levels of automation as a method for understanding the application of automation to the power subsystem. A concept for an expert system approach to energy planning and load management for these large spacecraft is also described. The energy planning function generates load profiles from load status tables for near-term periods up to 24 hours and compares these profiles to the available power system power and energy limits during both sunlight and eclipse periods. Alternative load profiles are generated if peak load limited are exceeded or if the profile leads to a projection of insufficient energy for full system recharge. Energy allocation algorithms provide the comprehensive load management to assure adequate power and energy margins for the power subsystem. The load management function includes load bus assignments, peak load management, and emergency load shedding. Once the plans are made and are in effect, the expert system will monitor the performance and health of the power subsystem and serve as a decision aid for dynamic load reapportionment, load shedding, and energy storage recharge. The functional architecture thus represents dual expert systems, one which is a planner/scheduler for load management and one which functions as the power system monitor.
