Capacity fading of INTELSAT VI nickel-hydrogen cells occurs when they are stored for long periods at room temperature. Rated at 48 Ah, the measured capacity of a new INTELSAT VI cell is typically between 63 and 67 Ah. After storage, discharge open-circuit at room temperature, the capacity declines by about 10 AH for both positive-limited cells activated with a precharge of hydrogen and negative-limited cells which are not hydrogen precharged. In most cases, the capacity loss can be recovered by cycling the cells for about 150 cycles at high rates of charge and discharge. The capacity loss does not occur when the cells are stored either discharged open-circuit at -20 Cel or charged open circuit and top-charged every 7 days. Experimental results are presented for cells maintained under the differing storage conditions described above, as well as recovery procedures.
